2015-2015 Working Curriculum

So, it's late July and I'm starting to get things planned out for the year. I always get excited when developing lesson plans, so I hope these sound fun enough to get you all through the year!

Please keep in mind, lesson plans are living, breathing, and always adapting things. These will change, but I wanted to get a heads up out there. Here we go!



Art 6 ART AS CULTURE:   Sixth grade artists will explore art across the globe as they zoom into various cultures from history and today. Using the elements of art as a technical guide, students will engage in themes such as…
  •  ANIMALS: Pre-colombian animal soft sculptures and SHAPE (fiber and drawing)
  • CELEBRATION: Wearable Chinese dragon head and COLOR (paint and paper sculpting)
  • CONNECTION: Tibetan Mandalas and TEXTURE (drawing and scratchboard)
  •  TIME:   Vanitas Still Lives of the Early Renaissance and VALUE (oil pastel)
  •  SPIRIT:   Native American Spirit Totem and FORM (clay)
  •  TRADITION:   African Mask Notan and SPACE (X-acto knives and paper)
  • NARRATIVE:   Eyptian Plaster Relief and LINE (Styrofoam tray and plaster)

ART 7 ART MOVEMENTS THROUGH TIME:   Seventh grade artists will learn about
the major Western art movements and artists who have helped to create the art
world as we know it today. Focusing on the principles of art, students will create
original works based on…

  • (POST-)IMPRESSIONISM:   Turner and the stormy skies (Van Gogh) and RHYTHM (chalk pastel on colored paper)
  • EXPRESSIONISM: Emotional Hanging Heads and PROPORTION
  •  SURREALISM:   Monster Engine and EMPHASIS (painting and shading)
  • REALISM:   Transparent Bottle Watercolor and UNITY 
  • POP:   Lichtenstein Pop Portraits and CONTRAST (transfer and Sumo)
  • NEOCLASSICAL:   Greco-Roman vases and BALANCE
  • RENAISSANCE:   The Human Figure Narratives and MOVEMENT

ART III ART AS A REFLECTION OF THE WORLD:   Art III students will begin more
advanced and conceptual projects on larger universal themes. With more freedom of
choice, students will decide their own technical focus as they work under guided
themes such as…

  • E&P MONSTERS: Using elements and principles in combo
  • NEW PERSPECTIVES: Abstracted satellite map (mixed media)
  • SURREALISM: Paradoxical Perspectives (drawing)
  •  IDENTITY: Self-Portrait with Sign Language Hands
  • TIME: Tunnel books (fibers)
  • POP CULTURE:   Color Reduction Printmaking (printmaking)
  •  REBELLION:   Metal Tooling Graffiti Wall
  • FANTASY:   Sumo Paint Fantasy Worlds
  • STILL LIFE:   Negative Space Symbolic Still Life

ART IV ART AS A REFLECTION OF THE WORLD:   Art IV students will continue from
art III on the creation of original works under larger universal themes. Focusing
more on personal style and voice, art IV students will develop explore more
abstracted topics and choose their technical focus for each project.
